1200 Streetlights Out in San Bernardino

Some 1,200 San Bernardino street lights — roughly one in 10 — have gone dark as copper wire thieves and layoffs are taking a toll on the city’s Public Works Department.

About 100 of the poles are down as a result of traffic accidents, San Bernardino Public Works Director Nadeem Majaj said. Most of the others don’t work, because thieves stripped them of their copper wiring to sell for recycling.
