Lighting Industry Insights: Q4 2024 Pulse of Lighting Survey and 2025 Projections

The Q4 2024 Pulse of Lighting Survey offers essential insights into the lighting industry’s current state and future trends. 

The recent survey by David Gordon of the Channel Marketing Group gathered insights from electrical distributors, manufacturers, and lighting agents/manufacturer representatives between 10-20 December 2024. The survey reached participants via email through Channel Marketing Group’s database, LinkedIn postings, and ElectricalTrends, receiving 234 responses:

  • 48 distributors
  • 186 manufacturer personnel, lighting agents, and representatives

Key Findings

  • On a weighted average, distributor sales declined by 3.63% in Q4 compared to Q3 2023.
  • Only 5% of distributors reported growth exceeding 5%, a significant drop from Q3’s 22%. Conversely, 35% reported substantial declines in sales.

Distributors & the “Top 4” Lighting Manufacturers

  • Distributors were asked what percentage of their business comes from the “Top 4” lighting manufacturers: Acuity, Current Lighting, Signify, and Cooper Lighting Solutions. 
  • On average, 48.4% of distributor sales are attributed to these manufacturers.

2025 Outlook

  • Distributors project a 3.24% increase in Q1 2025 sales.
  • 53% anticipate growth exceeding 5%, while 36% predict more than 2% decline.

Industry Insights

  • Optimism rises as the new president improves the business climate, clearing obstacles and expediting decision-making.
  • The lighting industry faces ongoing commoditization, emphasizing the critical role of lighting controls as a driver of organic growth.
