EdisonReport has learned that Cree implemented a layoff last week. It involved around 40 individuals mixed between the Racine and Durham locations with people were from various capacities. A few of the individuals were from national accounts, regional sales, marketing, purchasing, and even technical support. Internally, people were told the layoff was caused by a decline in sales over the last couple quarters. We believe this is third layoff that has affected Cree Inc’s lighting division within the last two years.
A company spokesperson told the EdisonReport, “Cree took limited workforce actions primarily in its Durham, NC, Racine, WI and Canadian facilities today affecting employees related to our lighting business. These actions align with the recently announced business strategy. Where possible, the overall impact of this action was reduced by offering alternative positions within the company. Cree continues to invest in the growth of the business and to hire according to business needs and conditions.”
