It’s Official: IES Names Dan Salinas as Interim Executive Director

The IES Board of Directors is excited to announce that it has approved the Executive Search Committee’s proposal to nominate Dan Salinas as Interim Executive Director. He will work closely with Tim Licitra whose last day with the Society will be on June 18th. A review of our needs and requirements preceded a rigorous selection process which led to the Committee’s selection.

In his capacity as interim, Dan will support the Board and staff in sustaining all operations and planned activities. Part of what makes Dan a perfect fit in this role as interim is his vast knowledge of the industry and our Society, with decades of experience as a volunteer, often times in leadership positions. He has served on numerous committees with the IES culminating in President of the Board of Directors (2013-2014) and continuing on the Board and Executive Committee until July 2015.

After his final term on the IES Board of Directors came to an end, he has continued to serve as a member of various committees and task groups. In addition, he served on the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professions (NCQLP) as Chair of the Certification Renewal Committee and on the Board of Directors for the National Lighting Controls Training Program. He is currently a voting member of the ASHRAE SSPC100 Existing Buildings Energy Committee. In addition, he is Chair of both the Cost Effective Metrics Working Group and the Technical Advisory Council for the California Energy Alliance (CEA). Dan has guest lectured on lighting, lighting controls and sustainable design for programs at College and University levels as well as for BC Hydro, Pacific Gas and Electric, and for the Illuminating Engineering Society at Section, District and National events. Dan and his wife Melonie live in Snohomish, Washington where they are involved in volunteer work for their church in the areas of music, leadership and adult education.

This past May, the IES Board of Directors established the Executive Search Committee in accordance with its succession policy composed of the following members:

• Antonio Garza (IES President)

• Susanne Seitinger (IES Vice President)

• James Potts (IES Treasurer)

• Frank Agraz (IES At-Large Director/incoming Board Vice President)

• Cheryl English (Past President of the IES)

• Peter Hugh (DEIR Committee Chair)

• Kathie Leslie (Nominating Committee Member)

The Committee is responsible for ensuring a smooth transition period and overseeing the selection of the next Executive Director. The Committee has been partnering with outgoing Executive Director Tim Licitra, Interim Executive Director Dan Salinas and the IES staff directors of each department to establish a transition plan that addresses priorities across departments (Standards & Research, Membership, Marketing and Communications, LD+A, Education, Accounting and Finance, and Executive). The plan ensures the ongoing stability of operations and programming of the society. The next tasks for the Committee include selecting an executive search firm and establishing a rigorous set of criteria for the selection of the next IES Executive Director. The Committee will present its recommendations to the IES Board of Directors for approval.
