TOSHIBA ACQUIRES GREENSTAR
Purchase Will Combine GreenStar’s Innovative Luminaire Product Lines
With Toshiba’s Expertise, 120-Year Lighting Heritage
Houston, Texas (May 1, 2013) – Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation (Toshiba) announced today that it is acquiring GreenStar Products, Inc., manufacturer of energy-efficient, long-lasting LED luminaires for roadway, area and canopy lighting applications.
In February 2012, Toshiba International Corporation entered into an agreement with San Antonio, Texas-based GreenStar to produce the LED luminaires and has since been marketing, selling and distributing the GreenStar products within the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation is coordinating with Toshiba International Corporation to manage the relationship with GreenStar and will continue selling its products in North America.
“We were attracted to GreenStar for its innovative product design and keen focus on developing luminaires that make the most of LED technology to address the market’s desire for more energy efficient and low maintenance products,” said Ken Honeycutt, President, Toshiba LED Lighting Systems Division. “Together, we will produce highly advanced, eco-friendly, and cost-saving LED lighting systems all backed by Toshiba’s trusted reliability.”
GreenStar’s innovative product designs include advanced photometric controls that deliver superior light distribution and greater uniformity than conventional high intensity discharge (HID) lighting. Additionally, GreenStar’s roadway product includes a built-in photocell that has a rated life that exceeds the life of a conventional NEMA twist lock photocell by as much as three times, delivering a truly long lasting and low maintenance alternative for roadway lighting. In addition to reduced energy consumption and long product life, these luminaires contain no mercury or lead, making them an attractive, environmentally friendly lighting solution.
The innovative LED luminaires are direct replacements for conventional HID lighting, such as high-pressure sodium or metal halide, which requires frequent maintenance and high wattage usage. In contrast, Toshiba’s LED luminaires effectively illuminate the same areas as traditional light sources, but offer LED arrays, each with a rated life of 100,000* hours which is six times as long as metal-halide and twice as long as high-pressure sodium products. As a result, LED luminaires provide one of the lowest life cycle costs of any lighting technology to date.
“The market is looking for ways to reduce energy and maintenance costs, and LED luminaires allow them to do just that while also significantly improving light quality,” said Mr. Honeycutt. “Combining Toshiba’s 120-year track record of developing and producing quality lighting products with GreenStar’s existing manufacturing operations uniquely positions us to take advantage of the current market potential. This acquisition allows us to supply a variety of markets from commercial and industrial to governmental and institutional in North America and beyond, with innovative, reliable products that create real value.”
As one of the largest lighting companies and LED lamp manufacturers in the world, Toshiba is dedicated to creating high quality lighting products, while keeping energy consumption low. One hundred percent of Toshiba’s current lighting product offering and product development in the U.S. is based on LED technology.
