The Miller Canfield Paddock & Stone law firm doesn’t have a conflict of interest when it represents both the city of Detroit and the city’s new Public Lighting Authority in the municipal bankruptcy case, according to the city and the lighting authority.
Lawyers for both entities defended Miller Canfield in legal briefs filed late Wednesday afternoon that were the first of as many as six that were to be filed on the controversy before a midnight deadline. At issue is a $210-million financing proposal for overhauling Detroit’s street lighting system that is plagued by outages.
