IES 2015 Annual Conference Theme “Share the Brilliance” Embraces the International Year of Light’s ideas of Educate, Inspire and Connect

New York, NY — The IES Annual Conference takes place at the JW Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis, November 8 – 10. The “Share the Brilliance” theme of this year’s conference unfolds through a series of coordinated events: IES Illumination Award presentations, two keynote speakers, sessions, special panel discussions, and informal networking.

The IES honors all the 2015 Illumination Award recipients on Sunday, November 8 during the “Society and Illumination Awards Dinner and Program.” Nineteen projects are recognized with Awards of Distinction, Excellence and Special Citations, while several IES members will be honored for both technical contributions and service to the Society.

The first keynote address is delivered by graffiti artist, author, entrepreneur and philanthropist Eric Wahl, who opens the festivities on Monday, November 9. Wahl’s on-stage painting seamlessly becomes a visual metaphor for the core of his message–encouraging organizations toward profitability through innovations and superior levels of performance.

The second keynote speaker, Seth Mattison, addresses the Conference on Tuesday morning, November 10. Mattison advises many of the world’s leading organizations on talent management, change and innovation, leadership and the future of work. Mattison was named to the “Editors’ Picks for Favorite Speakers for 2013” by MeetingsNet.

Color comes to the forefront on Tuesday, November 10. In 2014, the Society issued Position Statement PS-8-14, which states that “the CRI [Color Rendering Index] metric…has shortcomings that limit its ability to fully represent how humans perceive color.” With that, the IES Color Metric Task Group was created to develop an alternative to the CRI. The result of their work, IES Method for Evaluating Light Source Color Rendition (TM-30-15) will be discussed during the luncheon keynote panel discussion, entitled “Application of the IES Method for Evaluating Light Source Color Rendition.” The discussion will be moderated by Michael Royer of Pacific Northwest Laboratories. Panelists include lighting designer Randy Burkett, Aurelien David of Soraa and Penn State’s Kevin Houser. “TM-30 provides a framework for understanding and evaluating a light source’s potential to render color in objects. The perception of color is complicated, and color science may seem daunting,” says Houser, “but in this panel discussion, we’ll demonstrate that it is not difficult to understand and apply the IES method.”

Day-long events are also planned for IES Emerging Professionals on Saturday, November 7. The day begins with a tour of the Indy/Juno factory, followed by lunch at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Hall of Champions—a museum, exhibition center and conference center located adjacent to the NCAA’s national office. After education and networking sessions—including a scavenger hunt—the event closes with a review of the “enLIGHTen Photo Contest” winners and dinner in downtown Indianapolis.
