EXCLUSIVE: MUST CREDIT EDISONREPORT. I was very sad to receive a call from Tim Licitra yesterday. Tim is the Executive Director of the Illuminating Engineering Society and he is a good friend. He told me that he has accepted a job as Executive Director with a large global engineering association. He stressed that he was not looking for a job but was approached by a recruiter in mid-November 2020. He explained that he was very happy at IES, but the opportunity was an advancement of his career that he had to pursue. Earlier in 2020, the IES Board of Directors put together succession plan and they will now begin to execute to find the next Executive Director. Tim is working with the Board to provide a transition to ensure that momentum is not lost and that the society continues to provide high level membership services.
Tim joined the IES in OCT of 2015 and he has really modernized the Society and made many improvements. He will be missed and we wish him well.
EdisonReport readers will recall that we reported on Marsha Turner’s retirement from the IALD earlier this month. So IES and IALD are losing their Executive Directors at essentially the same time—this, as both organizations deal with a loss of LightFair revenue due to the 2020 show cancellation.

Dear Members,
It is with a great sense of pride that the Illuminating Engineering Society announces its Executive Director, Timothy Licitra, has accepted a new Executive Director position at an engineering association based in the New York Metropolitan Area.
During his tenure at the IES, Tim Licitra’s contributions in support of its vision and mission were many. With a progressive approach to association management, Tim helped the IES modernize its internal systems and operations. He expanded the IES education program, and, coupled with the rollout of a new learning management system, the IES is now able to provide its members with access to over 240 educational programs. Also during his time with the Society, Tim oversaw the establishment of a Global Access Affiliate membership program, welcoming the IES Australia New Zealand (IESANZ) as its first such member and thereby expanding the IES global footprint. He most recently led the organization in transitioning all of its nearly 100 lighting standards and guidelines to an interactive, digital platform now known as the Lighting Library®.
According to Antonio Garza, IES Board President, “As Executive Director of the IES, Tim has developed an all-star staff and management team, creating for us a pathway to success long into the future. He is an approachable, empathetic leader who bonded with members and volunteers, and while we are so thrilled for him to have this opportunity, he will be deeply missed.”
“I’m very grateful for the experiences I’ve had, and the relationships I’ve built since joining the IES,“ shares Tim Licitra. “Working with the IES staff, members, and volunteers over the past five and a half years has been remarkable. After several months of discussions with my new employer, I’m excited for the next phase in my career, but will always value my time with the IES.”
Over the next several weeks, Tim will collaborate with the IES Board of Directors to activate its succession policy. An Executive Search Committee will be appointed, which, in turn, will conduct an organizational assessment and prepare a transition plan with Tim’s full support. The well-being of the IES staff is a top priority, and the Board will be communicative and transparent as the process transpires.
