Nela Park, for years the pinnacle of lighting education facilities in North America, is being sold. Developed on the present site in 1911 for the National Electric Lamp Association, it became THE lighting educational facility that all those who followed tried to emulate.
It became the first industrial park in the world, and in 1975 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1933 General Electric Lighting & Electrical Institute was founded on the 92-acre campus.
On Wednesday, March 9th, GE Lighting also announced that it would close their linear fluorescent lamps plants in Bucyrus and Logan.
In 1975, 2,800 people worked at Nela Park. Presently, GE Lighting has approximately 700 employees, of which 250 are at Nela Park.
The sale of the park to a company associated with Phoenix Investors is scheduled to close at the end of March. Phoenix also owns the buildings and land for both the Bucyrus and Logan plants.
