Plaintiffs: Jiaxing Super Lighting Electric Appliance Co., Ltd. and Obert, Inc. (collectively “Super Lighting”)
Defendants: CH Lighting Technology Co., Ltd., Shaoxing Ruising Lighting Co., Ltd., and Elliott Electric Supply Inc.
The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas (CASE NO. 6:20-CV-00018-ADA) recently issued a ruling on the LED lighting patent litigation case on March 17, 2023. The Court denied Defendants’ motions for a new trial and judgment as a matter of law (JMOL) and affirmed its patent infringement judgment from July 29, 2022. Furthermore, the Court increased the judgment amount to $31.58 million due to Defendants’ continuous sales of infringing products.
Defendants had filed motions for judgment as a matter of law (JMOL) after the trial, claiming insufficient evidence to support the jury’s findings on validity, infringement, and willfulness. They also requested a new trial citing erroneous evidentiary rulings regarding validity and damage calculations, and alleged that the jury verdict resulted from Plaintiffs’ counsels’ inflammatory statements. However, the Court rejected these arguments and denied Defendants’ motions, stating that there was ample evidence at trial to support the jury’s findings, including willful infringement.
The Court granted Super Lighting’s request for damages, ruling that Defendants must pay damages for their undisclosed pre-trial sales and supplementary damages for infringing products sold after the jury’s verdict and before the recent final judgment. The Court rejected all Defendants’ post-trial motions.
