A former employee contacted the EdisonReport to reveal that the company Universal Douglas had failed to communicate with any of its employees in the manufacturing facility in Mexico about their settlement payments or any information regarding the closure of the company, a story that EdisonReport first broke. On Tuesday, 22 MAR employees were not allowed to enter the facility and were not given any explanation for the situation. Instead, they found a note on the gates that read “THE COMPANY WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. THIS DAY WILL BE INCLUDED IN YOUR PAYMENT, PLEASE HEAD BACK HOME.”
Contrary to reports that employees working in headquarters were notified of the situation, the employees in Mexico were left in the dark. They were unaware of what had happened and feared that there may have been an accident in the plant. It wasn’t until later that day when they learned through social media that the company was closing its doors.
Since then, the employees have yet to receive any information from Universal Douglas, and there are people outside of the facility guarding the gate day and night, waiting for the work union to proceed with an embargo of the material left inside the plant in the hopes of gathering some money to be able to pay settlements. This situation has left approximately 600 families without jobs, income, or answers. They feel unheard, unseen, and uncared for.
The employees are demanding justice and want their payments that they earned, which are an obligation by law in Mexico.
We reached out to Steve Wybo, the Chief Restructuring Officer, and we did not hear back.
