On a recent episode of the “Get a Grip on Lighting Podcast” (Episode 361), lighting designer Deborah Gottesman shared her insights on the importance of tailoring lighting solutions to individual client needs. Highlighting her work with a visually impaired client, Deborah emphasized that while contrast and shadows enhance lighting for most people, they can be detrimental for those with specific visual impairments. In such cases, she designs for flat, even lighting, demonstrating her client-focused approach.
With over 30 years of experience in the lighting industry, Deborah has expertise in design, engineering, management, education, and manufacturing. As an electrical engineer with an MBA in Real Property, she has led numerous projects across Heritage, Residential, and Commercial sectors. Deborah’s commitment to the field is further reflected in her teaching roles at various educational institutions and her active participation in professional organizations like the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Residential Lighting Committee and the Canadian National Committee of the Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE). Her comprehensive understanding of lighting from multiple perspectives informs her innovative and client-centric design approach.
