Marshall Miles Retires as CEO of Inventronics, Leaving a Legacy of Growth and Innovation

After more than 40 years in the tech sector, Marshall Miles, CEO of Inventronics, will step down on 31 October. His retirement marks the end of a significant 15-year journey with the company, highlighted by seven impactful years as CEO. It is a notable achievement, as it’s uncommon for a U.S. citizen to lead a Taiwan-based company. Under Miles’ guidance, Inventronics broadened its global reach, drove technological advancements, and strengthened its standing within the lighting industry.

A Legacy of Leadership and Global Expansion

In a LinkedIn post, Miles reflected on his career, “I am not straying too far and not quite ready for the rocking chair just yet.” Although stepping back from daily responsibilities, Miles will remain on the Board of Directors and serve as an advisor. This balance enables him to stay connected to Inventronics’ growth while also enjoying time with his family and at his Oklahoma ranch.

Miles tackled complex challenges during his tenure, particularly following Inventronics’ acquisition of OSRAM Digital Systems. Speaking to your humble editor at Light + Building in Frankfurt, in March 2024, he described the logistical hurdles involved. “We had to build HR, finance, and accounting from the ground up,” he explained, noting that the acquisition brought in employees across 31 countries. While Inventronics had the necessary infrastructure in China, countries like Germany and Italy required new systems. “Our IT system was inadequate for the expanded business,” Miles stated, creating a robust IT framework to support global operations.

Navigating Global Economic Challenges

Known for his insights into the global economy, Miles shared his views during our interview on shifting market dynamics. “China is currently facing greater struggles than many, with significant work ahead,” he observed, adding that countries like Vietnam and India seem to benefit from these shifts. Rising interest rates also impact construction in Europe and North America, yet Miles remains confident in Inventronics’ resilience. The company has maintained stability despite these global challenges by focusing on strategic product launches and smart inventory management.

Striking a Balance: In-House Production and Outsourcing

A central part of Miles’ leadership involved balancing in-house production with outsourcing, especially post-acquisition. OSRAM’s outsourcing strategy posed challenges, but Miles saw an opportunity to bring parts of their manufacturing into Inventronics. “Maintaining both strong production capabilities and effective sourcing is essential,” he noted. This balanced approach has become a core part of Inventronics’ strategy.

Embracing Energy Efficiency for a Sustainable Future

Miles has always advocated for sustainable lighting solutions, particularly in light of rising power demands due to electric vehicles and AI. He believes networked lighting controls hold enormous potential for energy savings as the world approaches net-zero targets. Inventronics’ recent launch of the first DALI+ driver exemplifies its commitment to sustainability. This achievement underscores Miles’ dedication to both industry innovation and environmental responsibility.

A Career of Steady Progress in Power Electronics

Miles’ career in power electronics spans nearly four decades. Reflecting on this journey, he told me in our L+B interview, “The progress is slow and steady. I don’t see any major breakthrough coming up, but it’s been a nice steady evolution, and it will continue.” His steady leadership and commitment to gradual progress have made Inventronics a trusted name in the industry.

A Heartfelt Farewell

As he steps into retirement, Miles expresses gratitude for the friendships and experiences gained over his career, which has taken him to all 50 U.S. states and 40 countries. “Thank you for making it an incredible ride! Please do stay in touch. And the next time you’re passing through Oklahoma, you have a standing invitation to visit me at the ranch.”

Miles leaves Inventronics optimistic about its future and confident in its leadership. His legacy of growth, innovation, and resilience will continue to guide the company through the dynamic challenges of the lighting industry.
