IES-PHL Celebrates Future Lighting Leaders at 2025 Philaments Awards Dinner

2025 Philaments Awards Dinner

The Illuminating Engineering Society Philadelphia Section (IES-PHL) recently hosted its 2025 Philaments Awards Dinner, an evening dedicated to recognizing the next generation of lighting professionals. Held at The Switch House, a stunning venue in Philadelphia, the event honored outstanding student achievement in lighting design and education through the IES Philadelphia Lighting Education Scholarships and the Student Design with Light Awards.

Recognizing Tomorrow’s Innovators

Each year, IES-PHL awards merit-based scholarships to students pursuing careers in various fields of lighting, including architectural, interior, industrial, theatrical, and landscape lighting. The scholarship program aims to support and inspire students who demonstrate both technical ability and a passion for giving back to the lighting community.

As part of the application, students were asked thoughtful questions such as: “How do you see yourself giving back to the Lighting Community in the future?” — encouraging them to reflect on their long-term vision and role in shaping the industry.

This year, two outstanding students were each awarded a $5,000 scholarship:

Gergana Petkova, Drexel University — Bachelor of Architecture

Jessica Moore, Drexel University — Bachelor of Architecture, with a Minor in Sustainability in the Built Environment

In addition to these scholarships, two students received Honorable Mention Awards, which include a $500 check, a one-year student membership to the IES, and a one-year subscription to the IES Library:

Illuminating Design in Action

In addition to the scholarship recognitions, the evening showcased the Design with Light Competition. Students were challenged to design and fabricate their own luminaires, which were not only judged for awards but also served as centerpieces at the event. This hands-on design challenge provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and technical skills in a real-world setting.
