It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our founder, mentor and friend, Sy Gerber. Sy passed away peacefully yesterday, Sunday November 13. We will miss him more than words can express.
Sy’s rich history in the lighting industry is what legends are made from. Inducted into the 2020 ALA Lighting Hall of Fame, Sy was known as ‘the epitome of honesty and integrity’, and that accolade is truly how we know Sy.
As a pillar in the lighting industry, Sy has given this industry so much.
Born just outside of Chicago, Sy quickly ascended to the top. “I’ve had the good fortune for being in the electrical business all my life” remembered Sy in his recent interview. F&G Electric Supply saw Sy working as a salesman, and on Saturdays as a showroom salesman. From there, Sy took his family to California where his knowledge of manufacturing was honed at Air King Fans. Air King bought a recess lighting company that Sy was instantly drawn to. Soon after, Sy founded Capri Lighting with his brother and Bert Finmark.
The rest, as they say, ‘is history’. Capri went on to be one of the most influential and successful recess lighting manufacturers in the industry. Many years later, Sy was able to live his dream by founding GM Lighting and watching his son Rob, and his beloved employees and reps turn it into the success that it is.
“It’s been a fascinating life”, Sy summed up during his recent interview.
