Paul Tarricone holds the Excel Award
Paul Tarricone holds the LD+A's Excel Award

The lighting industry is bidding farewell to an exceptional figure as Paul Tarricone, renowned as the Lighting industry’s finest editor (at least in North America), announces his retirement. With a friendship spanning two decades, we share mixed emotions of happiness for Paul’s new chapter and sadness for the void his departure will leave in our industry.

Paul took the helm of LD+A magazine during a challenging period, coinciding with your humble editor’s tenure as president of IES. The magazine was facing significant hurdles, but within one to two years, Paul led a remarkable re-engineering effort that propelled LD+A to new heights. Under his stewardship, the magazine flourished and thrived, earning admiration throughout the industry as well as several awards.  While I would have loved to take credit for bringing Paul on board, I must acknowledge that it was Bill Hanley who made the insightful decision.

Although our magazine, designing lighting (dl), competes with LD+A to some extent, our relationship with Paul and LD+A has always been characterized by a close personal and professional friendship. Throughout the years, Paul’s gentlemanly demeanor, unwavering dedication, and profound industry expertise have earned him the utmost respect from his peers. His retirement leaves a significant void in our industry, one that will be sorely missed.

As Paul embarks on this new chapter, we offer our warmest wishes for a fulfilling and joyful retirement. May he find well-deserved happiness and satisfaction in the next phase of his journey.

New York — Lighting Design + Application (LD+A), the leading publication in lighting design and application published by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), will bid farewell to its long-standing Editor and Publisher, Paul Tarricone, as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement beginning October 1.

Under Tarricone’s visionary leadership, LD+A emerged as a premier source of industry insights and expert analysis for lighting professionals. During his decades-long tenure, Tarricone ensured LD+A consistently delivered high-quality content that resonated with readers worldwide. Through his guidance, the magazine provided a platform for thought leaders, researchers, and practitioners to share their expertise and shape the future of lighting design.

It is no surprise that Tarricone’s list of accomplishments is quite long. In addition to publishing the Society’s Centennial issue in 2006, other strategic initiatives include the launch of the companion LD+A e-report newsletter in 2011, several redesigns of LD+A (the most recent in 2019), publication of the LD+A 50th Anniversary issue in 2021, and instituting an annual international issue with the first one published in 2021.

Reflecting on his retirement, Tarricone expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support he received throughout his career: “It has been an incredible privilege to serve as the Editor and Publisher of LD+A for the past 20 years. I am immensely proud of the impact we have made in advancing the field of lighting design and application. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our contributors, readers, and the entire LD+A team for their support and collaboration. It is their collective efforts that have made LD+A the publication it is today.”

As Tarricone enters this new chapter of his life, the IES acknowledges his remarkable contributions and wishes him a fulfilling and joyous retirement. His dedication, expertise, and commitment to the industry will leave an indelible mark on the field of lighting design for years to come.

LD+A will continue to uphold its esteemed reputation under new leadership. The search for Tarricone’s successor is currently underway, and the magazine remains committed to delivering exceptional content that informs, inspires, and transforms the lighting design and application industry.
