Bob Horner, IES Director of Public Policy for more than 7 years will be retiring this year. Bob came to IES with more than 35 years of industry experience, of which 21 years were spent with Osram Sylvania in management positions for Commercial Engineering, Fluorescent Product Marketing, and Visualization & Imaging business segments. He’s has been a long-standing member of the IES and the IEEE, and has served the National Lighting Bureau for 10 years as an officer and a member of the Board of Governors. Bob also co-authored two major IES educational programs: Fundamentals of Lighting (2009) and Discover Lighting, an on-line basic introduction to lighting. He has chaired or been a member of several IES committees and has been the recipient of two IES Presidential Awards.
Since 2010, Bob has served as our Director of Public Policy representing the Society to various audiences, including state and federal officials that affect the lighting industry. As a standards writing organization for the lighting industry, it is essential that the IES be at the forefront of these trends and activities and Bob has worked on behalf of the membership as a tireless advocate for quality lighting. Bob has advocated IES positions about quality lighting in several influential groups in Washington, DC, including the High Performance Building Coalition and the Alliance to Save Energy. Bob’s passion for the good of the lighting community and quality lighting have advanced the Society’s place among numerous organizations, gaining recognition where we had none, and improving upon those that have been long established.
Our membership has come to know Bob not only during his time as an IES Member, but also through his numerous presentations at the section, district, and regional levels, as well as his well-read column in LD+A. For the last 7 years, dating back to when he helped to create and define the role of Public Policy as our first staff member in this position, his work has expedited our Society’s long-term objectives by allowing IES to have a voice and for that voice to be heard by the right parties.
