Controls Engineer — Hapco

SUMMARY

The Controls Engineer’s success directly impacts the advancement of technology and innovation within Hapco. This individual will uphold the standards and expectations set forth by the Company and is responsible for contributing to the overall success of the manufacturing functions.

The self-motivated Controls Engineer will maintain and support the Company’s industry-leading products. The individual could work across a variety of functional groups that are directly involved in engineering, product development, and implementation and with international contract manufacturing partners. Will be an inventive problem solver who can work through technical challenges and employs realistic solutions. The Controls Engineer reports directly to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for machinery care and upgrade. This job will require machine and process improvement skills indicative of an ever-changing process. Knowledge of troubleshooting both electrical and mechanical systems. The individual will be comfortably familiar in the repair and upkeep of the above items. He/she will possess the skills of automation. Should be able to handle anything electrical as well as troubleshoot and program PLC’s.

  • Experience in industrial repair and renovation of machinery.
  • Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Procedures).
  • Ability to read and interpret Mechanical and Electrical Blueprints.
  • Ability to work with hands in mechanically oriented situations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical controls and draw basic and advance control schematics related to electrical controls.
  • Ability to interpret sketches and diagrams.
  • Must be able to relate to other individuals beyond giving and receiving instructions and will perform work activities requiring reasoning, negotiating, instructing, persuading, or speaking with others.
  • Must have experience using shop
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, overtime and, if required, be on call.
  • Must be able to demonstrate skills in both areas of maintenance including mechanical and electrical.
  • Must be motivated and driven to complete tasks.
  • Experience with a wide range of Industrial Maintenance Shop tools related to a variety of shop fabrications for Industrial Maintenance.
  • Ability to step outside comfort zone to experience a wide range of troubleshooting opportunities.
  • Ability to follow a detailed Preventative Maintenance initiative.
  • PLC experience required.
  • Experience with G and M Codes for CNC Operations.
  • Examines products at risk of failure and advises how to improve their structural integrity.
  • Provides rapid response to complaints and recovery from problems resulting from failure in product or service provided by Hapco.
  • Recommends removal or repair of defective parts or rebuilding the entire product.
  • Occasional travel for business purposes may be required.
  • Builds positive working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Maintains safe and clean work environment.
  • Will maintain a working relationship with the Union.
  • Complies with all safety policies plus company rules and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a sense of urgency with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good attendance.
  • Must be a self-starter; able to work independently, as-well-as with venders and others, as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Skill sets must include business related computer literacy, analytical problem solving, excellent verbal and written communication, and multi-task-oriented skills.

  • Strong manufacturing engineering skills with a solid ability to effectively research investigate and present information.
  • Experience with CNC equipment and understanding of fabrication, assembly and shop math, material processes, using and designing tools, fixtures and gauges.
  • Excellent working knowledge of PLC required, and Industrial PC experience preferred, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project a plus.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills are an absolute must.
  • Willingness to brainstorm with dynamic engineering and manufacturing team.
  • Dynamic team player who can think outside the box.
  • Ability to produce results.
  • Strong ability to effectively present information.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A minimum of (5) years Controls Engineer experience with related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A (2-4) year technical degree in a related field with an electronic emphasis is required.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, and perform trigonometric and geometric calculations.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must possess the ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or in group situations with customers, industry groups and co-workers; utilizing methods to include, but not limited to verbal presentations or conversations plus telephone and email communications.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form with the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in various situations. Read/interpret documents correctly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job and includes a combination of a manufacturing and an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving machining equipment, moving mechanical parts, dirt, oil, grease, metal shavings and fumes or airborne particles. The employee may occasionally be exposed to extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud with exposures ranging from 80db to more than 100 db at certain times. Specified safety equipment shall be always used while around such equipment or performing tasks within the plant. IMPORTANT: Eye protection, hearing protection and steel toed shoes/boots are required while present in designated areas of the manufacturing environment.
