Daniel Salinas assumed the office of President of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) effective July 1, 2013. Dan succeeded Chip Israel.
The mission of the IES is to improve the lighted environment by bringing together those with lighting knowledge and by translating that knowledge into actions that benefit the public.
Dan has been a member of the IES since 1987. From 1987 to the present, Dan has worked for Nelson Electric, Inc. as Lighting System Designer, Lighting Department Manager, and Lighting Controls Designer, and has worked on systems commissioning and programming projects. He has a lengthy list of design projects to his credit, including work for the Seattle Art Museum, the Bellevue Art Museum, the Seattle Space Needle renovations, Seattle University Champion Hall renovations and the Pacific Science Center.
He received a National Council for Qualifications for Lighting Professionals (NCQLP) Presidential Citation and two IES Illumination Awards of Merit. In 2012, he received the IES Puget Sound Section Meritorious Service Award.
“Looking at where we have come from over the last decade, I see so many areas where we have found success: this makes me proud of those who came before me. But, I also see where we need to build to take their work to the next level: more emphasis on lighting education at all levels of learning, additional research assistance for IES Committees, increased support for teacher training and for lighting research at institutions of higher learning, and in general, renewed support for the art of lighting. These are some of the areas where I would like to focus my energies in the coming year.” said President Salinas.
