John Bono Receives Street and Area Lighting Conference Lifetime Achievement Award

smalley.jpgEd Smalley is the Chairman of the IES Street and Area Lighting Conference and there is no greater voice in the Society than his. Literally.   While Ed is a very accomplished lighting professional, he could easily do television voice over. I kept waiting for him to say in his baritone voice, “This is CNN.”

Ed explained that we are in the greatest change in outdoor lighting since the 1980’s when HPS and Metal Halide were begininning to push out mercury vapor with the cities.   He thanked various committee members.

Bill Hanley spoke about the cross over in the 1998-1999 timeframe when SALC became affiliated with IES.  At that time SALC had approximately 200 members, today it is pushing 700.

John Bono received the Lifetime Achievement Award.  John thanked his wife, Ann, as well as his former employer Acuity Brands and his current employer Toshiba.  John spoke passionately about the early days and thanked Bill Hanley as the voice of wisdom as well as Val Landers as the ‘heart of the SALC.’
