Attendee Registration Opens for IES Light + Color Research Symposium

New York — The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) announces registration is now open for an IES sponsored research symposium called Light + Color, the third in a series devoted to the exchange of lighting research and application. The Light + Color symposium will connect the talents and expertise of the researcher, technologist and design professional to better understand the growing role of color in lighting, examining color vision, perception, preference, metrics and technology. The symposium will also include an opportunity to visit select laboratories relevant to color testing at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

“Based on experience from prior IES symposia, bringing together researchers and practitioners has proven to be productive in generating dialogue on topics of special interest to both audiences,” commented Pam Horner, Chair of the of the IES Symposium Committee. “To stimulate the dialogue between light and color researcher and practitioner, we’ve invited speakers from a variety of perspectives. We’ve also included an experiential element to the topic of color by inviting companies to show color demonstrations, which will offer a unique experience for attendees.”

Light + Color takes place at the Gaithersburg Hilton Hotel, Gaithersburg, MD on April 3 through 5, 2016. On Sunday evening, the first General Session is Color and the Theatre presented by Donald Holder, designer of 50 Broadway productions and nominee for eleven Tony awards, winning the 1998 Tony for Best Lighting Design for ‘The Lion King’ and the 2008 revival of ‘South Pacific’. The Session is sponsored by Finelite.

On Monday, the symposium will travel to NIST. There, Pamela Horner, IES Symposium Committee Chair will deliver the Welcome Session. She will be followed by General Sessions: Light Source Color Rendition by Randy Burkett, Randy Burkett Lighting Design and Michael Royer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Color Vision by Ray Murray, Nautica and Steven Shevell, University of Chicago; and Color Perception by Mark Fairchild, Rochester Institute of Technology and Kevan Shaw, KSLD. During the day, attendees will be given time to visit multiple NIST labs that work with color. At the end of the day, the Symposium will return to the Hilton Hotel where attendees will have the opportunity to experience first-hand color demonstrations from Color Experience Sponsors and to view research posters and discuss the results with their authors.

On Tuesday, Color Preference is delivered by Kevin Houser, The Pennsylvania State University and Malcolm Innes of Malcom Inness Design, UK. The Color Preference presentation is followed by a Color Roundtable to discuss what was learned during the symposium and future directions in color research and applications.

Continuing education credits will be available to symposium attendees. For more information about Light + Color, visit www.ies.org/symposium or contact Valerie Landers, IES Director of Member Services at [email protected].
