Keynote Speaker – Nobel Laureate Dr. William D. Phillips

The Commission Internationale De L’Eclairage (CIE), the international standards body for light, lighting and colour, will hold its Quadrennial Session in Washington, DC on June 16 – 22, 2019. Held every four years, the Session brings together experts from all over the world to hear the latest research and activity in light and lighting, conduct workshops on new and innovative advances in the field, and engage in technical committee meetings that further the work of CIE as a standards development organization.  The meeting will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel and is hosted by the United States National Committee of the CIE.

The primary event will be the 29th Session Conference (June 17-19), which features 84 oral presentations and 240 poster presentations by world leading scientists and engineers, including the keynote address by Nobel Laureate Dr. William D. Phillips of NIST.  Dr. Phillips is a 1997 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in laser cooling of atoms.  Dr. Phillips will speak on the Historic Revision of the International System of Units.

The topics of the conference will consider all aspects of the CIE including lighting fundamentals, metrology, indoor and outdoor lighting, photobiology and imaging technologies.  Along with the scientific content, seven workshops will be held, covering topics that include: imaging, colour rendition, colour quality, discomfort glare, flicker, lighting maintenance, and light and health, and horticultural lighting.

The last three days of the meeting (June 20 – 22) will be devoted to CIE Technical Committee and Division Meetings where international experts will work on incorporating the latest knowledge and technology into documents and standards that advance the state of lighting industry. These committee meetings are open to the public to observe the standard development process in CIE.
