James Jewell, R.I.P.

Subject: James Earl Jewell’s Passing

Today I received the sad news that IES past president James Jewell passed away on February 15th after failing to recover from a fall in December.  James served as IES president in 1984-85 and he also held the international position of treasurer of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) for several years.   James was one of those few extraordinary individuals who not only excelled in his professional life as a lighting designer, but who also possessed great wisdom and dispensed it with humor, humility, and sensitivity.  To almost everyone who knew him, he was both colleague and friend who somehow could disagree with you, but warmly.  He was theatrical and practical.  His obituary will cite his many professional accomplishments but cannot adequately express how much he meant to us or how deeply he will be missed.  He was one of the great ones.
