Blue/Purple LED Streetlights in WI, KS, and FL

EdisonReport has learned of a few lights turning purple, and then blue in Eau Claire, WI, Witchita, KS, and the Tampa area.  EdisonReport received the following statement from the FLDOT office in Tampa:

“The Department is aware of the issue and is working with the manufacturer’s warranty to replace the defective devices. The manufacturer has told us the defective products would have been sold between 2017 and 2019. We are also reaching out to local agencies to let them know the product is covered under warranty.”

Today we confirmed the source.  AEL, a division of Acuity Brands is the manufacturer and a company spokesman told the EdisonReport: “The referenced “blue light” effect occurred in a small percentage of AEL fixtures with components that have not been sold for several years. It is due to a spectral shift caused by phosphor displacement seen years after initial installation.  The light output is in no way harmful or unsafe.

As always, we stand behind the quality of our products, and we have been proactively working with customers who have experienced the issue to address any concerns.  Our customer service team is available for any questions customers may have.”
