Lighting the Way: IESNYC Announces 2023 Student Lighting Competition on ‘Circle of Light’ Theme

2023 IESNYC Student Lighting Competition
NEW YORK CITY – The Illuminating Engineering Society of New York City (IESNYC) is proud to announce the 2023 Student Lighting Competition with the theme “Circle of Light.” This competition is open to all students attending design colleges or universities in the five boroughs of New York City or the New York counties of the former Mid-Hudson Section.

The competition challenges students to create a three-dimensional study, showcasing the role of light in the cyclical nature of life. Light has a critical function in many of life’s cycles like the human circadian rhythm, the lunar phases and the changing of seasons. The cycle of light can be considered with regards to a product life cycle and the cycle of sustainability or how light engages in the circularity of life itself.

The 2023 IESNYC Student Lighting Competition will be an in-person event held at Americas Hall 2 at the New York Hilton Midtown on March 7th, 2023 during the LEDucation Trade Show & Conference. Over 100 students from New York City schools will be displaying their creative lighting projects. The exhibition will be open for public starting at 4:30 PM, awards will be announced at 5:30, and the exhibition will close at 7:00 PM.

Student registration for the competition is open for projects to be submitted by March 7th, 2023. A unique link is provided for students to register and upload project documentation by the deadline, with the website being used to make projects accessible to professionals, friends, and family.

The IESNYC Student Lighting Competition is dedicated to the society’s founder, Patricia DiMaggio. The competition, which has grown from 8 students in 2000 to over 200 students today, upholds Patricia’s goals of education, community, and friendly competition. The competition aims to promote education and raise awareness about the importance of lighting and is open to students from lighting, architecture, interior design, art, product design, photography, and electrical engineering programs.
