A record number of 25,000 streetlights are currently out across Los Angeles, raising significant safety concerns in numerous neighborhoods. The NBC4 I-Team found that many commercial and residential blocks are completely dark, prompting fears about increased crime.
Of the 223,000 streetlights in Los Angeles, 25,890 are not working, a record high according to LA’s Bureau of Street Lighting. Residents highlight the risk of crime in areas plunged into darkness. Despite complaints to 311, many lights remain unfixed, leaving streets around Downtown LA and popular venues like the Crypto.Com Arena in shadows. Vandalism and theft contribute to the problem, with some areas waiting over a year for repairs. While efforts are underway to address the issue, residents lament the lack of immediate solutions in a city striving for safety.
