In memory of “Doc” – Dr. Ronald Helms
On May 23, 2024, our friend and mentor, Doc Helms left this worldly place. We are all saddened and heavyhearted when we think of this loss and the significant contributions he made to the lighting industry.
He received his undergraduate degree and master’s from the University of Illinois and PhD from Ohio State University. He was a professor of Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado from 1965-1981 and advocated the importance of the Illuminating Engineering program – establishing a benchmark for advanced lighting education. He left CU to become the head of the Architectural Engineering program at the University of Kansas. At KU he established the Bob Foley Illumination laboratory in 1985. He then went on to North Carolia A&T State University to establish a new illuminating engineering program and retired in 2006.
Doc nurtured and inspired so many engineers, designers, educators and manufacturing professionals. He has published many papers, authored three textbooks, presented technical programs and was an active volunteer for the Illuminating Engineering Society. He was also an advocate for professional recognition for the discipline of Architectural Engineering with the creation of the National Society of Architectural Engineers. We remember Doc for his keen sense of humor and dedication to his students, who he referred to as his family.
Doc leaves a lasting legacy with his four children, eight grandchildren, extended family and countless lighting professionals who had the honor of his college mentorship or attending his education programs.
The family is requesting donations to the Wounded Warrior Project in his memory.
He is now at peace. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

Keep the lights on until we see you again Doc!
