Erik Ennen Discusses His Vision for NALMCO’s Future

Insights from a Conversation with Randy Reid at the 71st NALMCO Convention

As LM&M Magazine Editor, I spoke with Erik Ennen, NALMCO’s President-Elect, at the recent 71st NALMCO convention in Orlando. Erik explained his vision and goals for NALMCO’s future. He emphasized collaboration, certification programs, and financial health. He presented a clear plan for expanding NALMCO’s lighting and energy management role.

Goals and Objectives for the Presidency

Erik will begin his two-year term on 1 January. His primary goals include fostering partnerships with key industry organizations, such as IES and the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA). Additionally, he plans to expand NALMCO’s reach by connecting with vocational schools. His focus on certifications also aims to bring new talent into the industry. By promoting certifications for apprentices and senior lighting technicians, Erik wants to prepare NALMCO for the future. He’s also exploring partnerships with utilities to create a lighting control certification.

Growing Revenue through Certifications

Erik sees certification programs as an opportunity for revenue growth. For instance, he and Brian Baker recently hosted training at PG&E in San Francisco, which concluded with a Certified Lighting Controls Professional (CLCP) exam. By certifying utility workers, NALMCO can meet the industry’s growing demand for skilled professionals in energy efficiency. This focus supports the shift toward maximizing energy use in buildings—a trend discussed by Mark Lien in his presentation on AI and energy.

The Role of GUV Certification Programs

Erik is passionate about developing germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) certification in response to new disinfection standards, including ASHRAE 241. Though still in its early stages, this certification has already drawn attention. Erik has worked closely with the University of Maryland School of Public Health, ASHRAE, and industry experts to ensure it meets quality standards. He believes this program will have a lasting impact on the industry.

Building Connections in NALMCO

Erik reflected on the convention and highlighted the importance of connecting with other NALMCO members. He spoke about the continued support from past NALMCO presidents, many of whom own family businesses. Erik attended the well-received past presidents’ breakfast, where former president Norma Frank provided an update on IES activities. Erik and Norma currently co-chair the RP-36 committee, focusing on educating members about industry standards.

Strengthening Financial Health and Expanding NALMCO’s Reach

As the outgoing Treasurer, Erik understands NALMCO’s finances well. The organization currently has reserves covering 18 to 24 months of operations. Erik’s aim is to grow these reserves while broadening NALMCO’s industry role. Many NALMCO members now work on projects beyond lighting, including EV infrastructure, solar, and lighting controls. Erik encourages members to use these additional skills to meet evolving client needs.

Adapting to Changes in Lighting Management

Erik noted that lighting maintenance is becoming a smaller part of many businesses, often accounting for as little as 10% of their services. As the industry changes, clients increasingly ask for broader energy management solutions. Erik believes NALMCO members should adapt by expanding their offerings, helping them stay relevant in a shifting market.

Looking Ahead

Erik remains optimistic about NALMCO’s future. The board has spent significant time on strategic planning, focusing on new partnerships and revenue sources. As NALMCO grows, members can expect more collaboration, expanded certifications, and additional support. Erik’s vision emphasizes adaptability and expansion, preparing the organization to be a leading resource for the industry’s evolving needs.
