Signify Targets Atomi in Latest LED Patent Dispute

Signify Targets Atomi

In a recent legal action, Signify Holding B.V. targets Atomi Inc. in its latest LED patent dispute. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. It centers on allegations of patent infringement, with Signify accusing Atomi of using its proprietary LED and smart lighting technologies without permission.

Background on the Companies

Signify holds an extensive patent portfolio focused on advancing LED and smart lighting. Known for brands like Philips Hue and Wiz, Signify has set standards in connected lighting solutions. Meanwhile, Atomi, based in New York, offers competing LED products, including smart bulbs and home lighting systems.

Allegations of Patent Infringement

Signify claims that several of Atomi’s products infringe on its patents. According to the lawsuit, Atomi manufactures, sells, and imports LED lighting products that allegedly use technology covered by Signify’s patents. Key examples include:

  • U.S. Patent No. 7,358,961: LED lighting systems with spectral control via user interfaces.
  • U.S. Patent No. 8,378,591: String light configurations with on/off state control.
  • U.S. Patent No. 8,896,414: Synchronization within home control systems.
  • U.S. Patent No. 9,184,497: LED devices incorporating RF antennas.
  • U.S. Patent No. RE49,320: Additional RF antenna-enabled lighting device features.

Signify’s complaint outlines specific Atomi products that allegedly infringe on these patents. For example, Atomi’s “Smart Color Bulb” mirrors features from the ’961 patent, while the “Smart Bridge” allegedly infringes on home control system synchronization technology covered under the ’414 patent.

Claims of Willful Infringement

Signify asserts that it informed Atomi of these potential infringements as early as July 2021. Despite this, Atomi reportedly continued to produce and market the contested products. Signify argues that this continued activity demonstrates willful infringement, which could lead to enhanced damages under U.S. patent law. To address this, Signify seeks financial compensation and a permanent injunction to stop Atomi from selling or manufacturing these products.

Potential Implications

This case highlights the intense competition within the smart lighting market. If Signify succeeds, Atomi may face significant financial penalties and could be forced to alter or halt its product offerings.
