I was saddened to learn that LEDs Magazine will publish its final issue on 16 December 2024, marking the end of an impressive 20-year run. The magazine has been more than a publication for our industry—it has been a trusted companion through the LED revolution.
A Beacon of Knowledge During the LED Industry’s Early Days
I remember when LEDs Magazine began, about five years after your humble editor launched The EdisonReport. At the time, the LED industry was described as the “Wild West.” The technology was new, the market was chaotic, and reliable information was hard to come by. Amid this uncertainty, LEDs Magazine emerged as the definitive source of clarity and knowledge.
Many credit Jim Brodrick, the former Program Manager for the DOE’s Solid-State Lighting (SSL) program, for the rise of LED technology. His work deserves recognition, but I believe LEDs Magazine played an equally important role. During its first decade, I worked in sales, promoting ballasts and drivers to OEMs. Nearly every professional I met had the latest issue of LEDs Magazine on their desk. When I pitched technologies like electronic HID or light-emitting plasma, they often quoted magazine articles pointing to the inevitable dominance of LEDs.
Challenges and Leadership
In recent years, LEDs Magazine has faced challenges as the industry evolved. A few years ago, at LEDucation, I noticed a decline in the quality of paper used in their print issues—a small but telling sign of financial strain. Despite this, the content never faltered. The magazine maintained its reputation for delivering top-notch journalism, largely thanks to its talented team.
When Maury Wright retired, many wondered how the magazine would maintain its high standards. Carrie Meadows stepped into the role of Editor-in-Chief and excelled. Maury noted in a LinkedIn post that “Carrie has been a rock over the years in producing the magazine and learned and utilized far more about the LED and SSL spaces than she will ever admit.”
Chronicling the Evolution of LEDs
Over its two decades, LEDs Magazine documented the rapid evolution of the LED market. It covered the transition from early point light sources to the widespread adoption of energy-efficient lighting systems. The magazine didn’t just report on these developments—it celebrated the relentless innovation driving the industry forward.
In June 2024, Editor-in-Chief Carrie Meadows honored Maury after he passed away in a heartfelt article titled “Remembering Maury Wright: More Than an Editor, a Friend.” Her tribute captured Maury’s passion and significant contributions to the industry. I also wrote an article about Maury and was deeply moved when his wife, Andrea, sent me a thoughtful thank-you note—a keepsake I will always cherish.
A Legacy of Excellence
Endeavor Business Media purchased LEDs’ Magazine from Pennwell in 2019. Currently, Carris is i+s Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief. Acquiring LEDs Magazine wasn’t a bad deal for EMB; after all, they still have Carrie Meadows!
As LEDs Magazine prepares to close its final chapter, we salute its incredible legacy. It was more than a publication—it was a guiding light for an industry in transformation. The magazine’s impact will endure, inspiring innovation in lighting for years to come.
