US Pole on Tariffs, Wildfires, and Lighting Innovation
While attending LEDucation 2025, EdisonReport’s Randy Reid sat down with Matthew Bindel of US Pole to discuss a range of topics—from wildfires to economic pressures and product innovation. Bindel, based in Southern California, spoke candidly about the effects of recent wildfires on the Los Angeles area.
“It’s been devastating,” Bindel shared. “Lots of our friends and family were affected. I live just about a mile from the Palisades, where everything was going on.” Fortunately, US Pole’s facility is located outside of Los Angeles and wasn’t directly impacted, though many connected to the company were.
Bindel also expressed support for Light Up LA, an initiative supported by IES and others, aimed at helping those affected by the wildfires.
Economic Pressures and Tariff Uncertainty
Turning to industry challenges, Bindel noted economic uncertainty and the looming threat of new tariffs. “We’re keeping a tight eye on our suppliers and supply chain,” he said. “The cost of aluminum and steel is always a concern.”
When asked about sourcing, Bindel shared that US Pole relies primarily on Canadian materials, with some coming from Mexico and Asia. “We try to source as much from the U.S. as possible. Our products are Buy America and BABA compliant.”
Pricing Strategy and Potential Increases
Reid asked about pricing, and Bindel revealed that US Pole implemented a standard price increase at the end of last year—the first in over two years. “It was really just to keep up with inflation,” he explained. While nothing new has been announced, Bindel acknowledged that a price adjustment might be coming within the next couple of months, depending on market conditions.
As for the Canadian tariffs, Bindel responded with cautious humor: “They may stick for a day, they may be canceled the next. All we can do is play it day by day.”
New Product Spotlight: Pickleball Lighting and Wall Sconces
On a more exciting note, Bindel shared news about two innovative new products from US Pole. The first is a dedicated pickleball and tennis court lighting fixture. “Pickleball is hugely popular right now,” he said. “We’ve designed a brand-new optic specifically for these courts, which enhances visibility while reducing glare and light spill.”
The second product is a cubic wall sconce featuring an updated optical design optimized for wall washing. “We’re getting into more architectural flood and washing-type fixtures,” he added.
Lighting for the Pickleball Boom
Bindel explained that while pickleball lighting uses similar principles to tennis court lighting, the distribution is different. “Since the courts are smaller and poles are already a sufficient height, we can bring the lighting down and focus it more directly. Our optic takes that 60 to 90-degree high-angle light and redirects it onto the court.”
And yes—the new pickleball lights are made right in Los Angeles.
Closing Thoughts
As the conversation wrapped up, Reid congratulated Bindel on the company’s advancements. With challenges ahead but exciting innovations in play, US Pole continues to adapt and push forward in a rapidly changing lighting landscape.
