Anne Kustner Talks Trends and Long-Term Thinking at LightFair 2025
During LightFair 2025 in Las Vegas, designing lighting (dl) Editor Randy Reid sat down with Anne Kustner of AKLD for a candid C-Suite Series interview covering the state of the lighting design industry, LightFair, and the need for forward-thinking solutions. Anne Kustner LightFair 2025
Anne, a veteran of over 35 LightFairs, reflected on this year’s event, praising the educational programming—much of which IES curated. However, she acknowledged a lighter-than-usual exhibitor presence. “It’s a learning curve for Messe Frankfurt,” she noted, referencing the organizer’s transition into the U.S. market. Anne gives a very frank assessment of the show and discusses how she supports exhibitors.
One feature she welcomed enthusiastically was the controversial blackout lighting on the show floor. “I love it,” she said. “You can actually see the products the way they’re intended to be seen.”
Anne also discussed the impact of tariffs on project timelines. “Pricing volatility has caused some clients to delay decisions,” she said. Many projects are now on hold as stakeholders await clarity. She emphasized the growing importance of maintainability, especially for long-term installations.
Her advocacy for longer-life drivers and higher-performance systems stems from a clear trend in owner expectations. “One of our clients told us they expect the building to last 60 to 65 years,” she said. “That changes the conversation entirely.”
In closing, Anne reminded the audience that LightFair is about more than just products—it’s about supporting the industry and solving problems.
