NAILD, DLC, and the Importance of Civility
Last week, we posted the very aggressive NAILD public letter to the DLC along with DLC’s response. Yesterday, on my daily podcast Today in Lighting, I highlighted the importance of civility in our industry. The segment was very well received as I have had many comments.
Yesterday, I came across a compelling article by David Gordon, editor of US Lighting Trends. In his piece, NAILD Shares Concerns, DLC Responds, We Ask Questions, he not only raises excellent points but also poses thoughtful questions that deserve careful consideration.
Lessons From a Decade Ago
About 10 years ago, issues with the DLC were reaching a boiling point. Rather than trying to embarrass the DLC, I took a different approach. At my expense, EdisonReport hosted a stakeholder meeting at the Marriott Marquis in New York, the Monday before LightFair. The DLC participated, and the event drew a strong turnout and a fascinating and passionate discussion.

At that time, Tina Halfpenny had just joined the DLC as Director. She had been on the job for about a week. The meeting brought everyone together for an open, professional discussion. All of the large manufacturers attended, along with other stakeholders. Edward Bartholomew provided steady guidance that helped the dialogue remain constructive.
The Power of Dialogue
Your humble editor would never claim credit for what followed, but after that meeting we saw positive changes from the DLC. The lesson was clear. Progress is not achieved by calling people out. It comes from gathering people together and having a civil conversation.
Moving Forward
Since NAILD’s original letter, we have spoken several times with their leadership team. Late yesterday, we received this follow-up response, which we share here for the benefit of the industry.

It is an improvement!
Developing….
