Juergen Georges Hess, Rest in Peace

 Juergen Georges Hess

The New Year begins with sad news from Germany. Juergen Georges Hess (26 March 1945 – 28 December 2025) passed away on 28 December in Villingen, Germany.

To his many friends and colleagues across the global lighting industry, George Hess was both a visionary leader and an affable presence. He carried forward the family business founded in the mid-1940s and transformed it into Hess Form + Light, an architectural lighting company recognized internationally for its distinctive design language and uncompromising product quality. Under his leadership, the firm became synonymous with thoughtfully crafted luminaires that balanced form, function, and durability—fixtures that were as expressive as they were engineered.

Georges influence extended well beyond Germany. The company’s expansion into North America, operating as Hessamerica, introduced his design philosophy to a broader market. Today, that legacy continues as part of Experience Brands, reflecting the enduring strength of the foundation he built.

Your humble editor had the privilege of meeting him in person.  Terry O’Toole, former GM of .hessamerca arranged a dinner for us in Florida a few decades ago. I found him to be very interesting and passionate.

Those who worked with Georges often spoke of his warmth, curiosity, and deep respect for both design and the people behind it. He believed lighting could shape experience and place, and he led by example—combining entrepreneurial drive with a genuine appreciation for collaboration.

Georges Hess will be laid to rest on 16 January in Villingen, in Germany’s Black Forest region. The lighting community mourns the loss of a respected leader and friend.

May he rest in peace.
