Heard at LEDucation: Industry Sees Acrylic Price Increases

Industry Sees Acrylic Price Increases Amid Petrochemical Volatility

Acrylic pricing is beginning to move upward due to volatility and instability in global petrochemical products.   While there are no shortages at this time, supply chain pressure is clearly building. While acrylic lenses are a usually a minor component cost in luminaires, they are vital to our industry.

Acrylic, or PMMA, is derived from petrochemical feedstocks (Acetone, Methanol, Natural Gas) that are directly tied to oil and gas markets. With disruption in the Middle East—particularly around key shipping routes—those upstream materials are becoming more expensive and harder to secure.

Price Increases Already Underway

At LEDucation, your humble editor heard from Donny Wall, Principal of Bill Brown Sales.  Donny explained that acrylic pricing has already increased. Just as important, he sees a second round of increases is expected in the near term.

This aligns with broader trends across plastics, where rising feedstock costs and logistics challenges are pushing manufacturers to adjust pricing. For lighting manufacturers, that impact will show up quickly in lenses, light guides, and diffusers.

No Shortage—Yet

At this point, there are no resin shortages. Product is still available, and the raw material manufacturers continue to operate without disruption.
