Above and Beyond: A Visual Memorial to Vietnam’s Fallen

A video circulating this week shows Above and Beyond, a striking memorial created by a group of veteran artists that suspends 58,307 dog tags representing every American fatality from the Vietnam War from the ceiling, each hand-stamped and arranged chronologically by date of death. The installation, sponsored by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, took two years to complete and has been on public display in Chicago. As we head into this 4th of July weekend, it’s a striking reminder of the human cost behind the numbers.
