SDSU Viejas Arena Chooses Lumetric

SmartPOD to bring versatility and energy savings to multi-purpose Arena

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – May 3, 2011 – LumetricTM Inc, a leading provider of intelligent large area lighting (ILAL) solutions, today announced that the Associated Students of San Diego State University (SDSU) will fully retrofit its existing indoor arena lighting with the SmartPODTM system at the Viejas Arena located on SDSU’s campus in San Diego, California. SDSU worked with The LINC Group, the premiere global provider of comprehensive green building solutions, to select the SmartPOD plug-and-play solution to replace its outmoded, inefficient and rigid lighting infrastructure to enhance versatility at the multi-use venue, while scoring energy savings.

Lumetric’s SmartPOD system integrates advanced controls, including zoning and scheduling, with direct drive, solid-state high intensity discharge (HID) technology to outfit the 12,500-seat arena with 35 foot candles of sun-quality light. The arena will replace 222 existing high bay luminaires ranging between 1000W and 250W with UL-certified, linear dimming-equipped 200W to 320W SmartPOD luminaires. After completion, the new system is expected to achieve up to 50% energy savings without compromising a single point in light output, promising an exceptionally well-lit home for the 2011 National Championship Tournament second seed-spot earning SDSU Aztecs men’s basketball team.

The Lumetric team will be working closely with SDSU to create pre-programmed scenarios for the various lighting schemes associated with each type of event. Tremendous energy savings will result from being able to turn unneeded lights off or dimmed, something the legacy system was unable to do. Additionally, the ease of use of the touch screen interface

will ensure that each pre-determined lighting scheme is executed perfectly every time.

“We were looking for a better way to control light levels and customize conditions for a wide array of events in addition to sports, such as concerts, family shows and conventions,” said Glen Brandenburg, SDSU’s Associated Students Sustainability Advisor. “The Viejas Arena’s impeccable sight lines need to be complemented with outstanding lighting conditions, and we can do that with the SmartPOD. We can also choose from 8 pre-set lighting conditions to achieve the exact level of light we need, right when we want it. Once installed, the arena staff will be able to change lighting scenarios from an Aztec men’s basketball game, to an evening concert with the push of a button. It is an arena manager’s dream come true.”

The new SmartPOD system adds unparalleled versatility to the arena’s lighting network. Groundbreaking linear dimming capabilities customize light levels – over the court, where ceilings reach as high as 130 feet, 44 320W luminaires operate at full capacity. Toward the upper concourse levels and near exits where seats are closer to the ceiling, luminaires dim to 165W in order to avoid a harsh glare immediately below the lamps. The control system can be scheduled for use according to the time of day and expected level of occupancy, all accessible through the easy-to-use touch screen interface.

With unmatched controllability, the SmartPOD is the ideal lighting system for sports arenas and any high bay facility. Now exceeding millions of operating hours, the SmartPOD has already been installed for customers across numerous industries, including retail stores, manufacturing facilities and storage warehouses, among many others.
