
After more than a decade of service to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Karen Willis has announced her retirement, effective 15 January. Karen’s retirement marks the close of a career that has shaped standards work in the U.S. and around the world.
Karen began her career at NEMA in 2014 as a Program Manager for the American National Standards Lighting Group. In 2018, she was promoted to Industry Director of Lighting Systems. In this role, she oversaw key standards development, supported manufacturers and regulators, and advanced the technical foundation of the lighting sector. Over the years, her work has strengthened industry collaboration. It positioned NEMA members to meet evolving technological and regulatory challenges.
Throughout her career, Karen combined technical expertise with marketing, business development, and program management. Before joining NEMA, she gained experience in distribution engineering, B2B marketing, sales support, GSA contract coordination, technical communications, and market analysis. This combination allowed her to lead complex initiatives. She clearly communicated technical information to diverse stakeholders.
Her influence extended globally. She represented NEMA for eight years on the ANSI National Committee to the IEC. Also, she contributed to the NLB and served as a Director on the Board of the Global Lighting Association. These roles helped align U.S. perspectives with international lighting standards.
Karen’s retirement reflects a career defined by leadership, collaboration, and vision. Moreover, her work in energy efficiency, smart lighting, and global standards will continue to impact the lighting industry for years to come. Colleagues and industry partners recognize her commitment, clarity, and integrity as exemplary.
