Light Middle East 2027: Will the Dubai Show Go On?

Yes, says Messe Frankfurt. Likely, says ChatGPT.

The lighting industry has been burned before.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturers invested heavily in trade shows only to see some events canceled or postponed, occasionally at the last minute. Booths had been designed, products shipped, airline tickets purchased and hotel rooms booked. For some exhibitors, the losses were substantial.

Your humble editor normally purchases international airfare about six months in advance. And because I am cheap—or perhaps cost-conscious is the better description—I typically buy nonrefundable tickets.

That brings me to Light + Intelligent Building Middle East, scheduled for 12–14 January 2027 at the Dubai World Trade Center.

Before buying my ticket to Dubai, I contacted Messe Frankfurt and asked the obvious question: Is the show really going to happen?

Messe Frankfurt assured me that the decision has been made and the show is moving forward as planned.

On 8 AUG, the United Arab Emirates accused Iran of launching a missile at a vessel linked to the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while it transited the Strait of Hormuz. This is one of many incidents that brought the conflict to the UAE and underscored the continuing uncertainty surrounding travel and commerce in the Gulf.

At the same time, Dubai remains very much open for business, and Messe Frankfurt continues to actively promote Light + Intelligent Building Middle East for 12–14 January. The show’s website is live with exhibitor, speaker and visitor information, and Messe Frankfurt describes the 2027 edition as the event’s 20th anniversary.

With a quick resolution to the Iran war looking increasingly unlikely, I wanted a second opinion. So I asked ChatGPT to assess the likelihood that Light + Intelligent Building Middle East will actually take place in January.

There have been flight disruptions and airspace issues in the region; as of August 9, Emirates still had some service to Bahrain and Kuwait suspended while other airlines were adjusting operations. There are also reports that some international companies have temporarily moved personnel because of the regional security situation. At the same time, day-to-day life in Dubai is described as largely normal, with busy roads, public transportation and commercial activity continuing.

What does that mean for Light + Intelligent Building Middle East?

There are several reasons I’d lean toward it happening.

First, Messe Frankfurt has already committed to January 12–14, 2027 and is selling exhibition participation.

Second, this isn’t a small standalone conference. It’s co-located with Intersec, which makes the combined event considerably more important to Dubai World Trade Centre and Messe Frankfurt.

Third, Light + Intelligent Building Middle East has become a significant international lighting event. The 2026 edition reported 340 exhibitors from 30 countries and 16,473 visitors from 95 countries. Messe Frankfurt is positioning 2027 as the show’s 20th-anniversary edition, which gives them another incentive to preserve the dates if at all possible.

My estimate today

If I had to put numbers on it as of August 10, I’d roughly handicap it this way:

For your purposes, I’d continue planning to attend, but I would avoid buying anything nonrefundable yet. By roughly October or early November, we’ll know considerably more. The strongest signals will be whether Messe Frankfurt begins announcing major exhibitors and THINKLIGHT speakers, whether Intersec continues normally, and whether Emirates’ regional network has stabilized.

Messe Frankfurt says the show is going forward, and ChatGPT puts the odds at 75–85%. Those are pretty good odds, and I fully expect to be in Dubai in January. But they are not quite good enough for your humble editor to pull the trigger on a nonrefundable ticket just yet. For now, I’ll keep watching the war, the airlines and the trade show calendar.
