Cooper Lights Up the IALD Enlighten Americas Opening Reception

**AUSTIN, Texas—**The IALD Enlighten Americas opening reception brought a lively crowd to the Texas Ballroom. Sponsored by Cooper Lighting Solutions, the President’s Opening Reception filled the room mainly with lighting designers.

The drinks flowed, and conversations kept the ballroom buzzing. Meanwhile, bacon-wrapped shrimp emerged as the favorite at my table. Judging by the crowd, everyone seemed ready to enjoy the evening.

Lance Bennett of Cooper Lighting Solutions kicked things off with audience participation. “I say ‘Cooper,’ you say ‘Lighting.’” In response, the room delivered: “Cooper!” “Lighting!”

Lance then offered a gracious acknowledgment of Cooper’s longstanding support. He called the sponsorship an honor and a privilege. By his estimate, that tradition stretched 20 years.

Next, he welcomed IALD President Carla Wilkins, IALD, CLD, to the microphone.

Celebrating a Century of Lighting Design

Carla shared a historical observation that surprised many attendees, including your humble editor.  She pointed to a 1926 German publication discussing lighting and architecture. In her remarks, she identified it as an early written recognition of the profession.

For Carla, that century-long connection offered another reason to celebrate. Lighting design has a rich tradition, and she encouraged everyone to enjoy the gathering.

Her message fit the occasion. After all, the reception brought colleagues together before several days of education, discussion, and shared ideas.

Education Trust Takes the Spotlight

Next, IALD Education Trust President Jill Cody, FIALD, CLD, thanked Cooper for hosting the celebration. She also encouraged attendees to watch for Trust activities throughout the conference.

“You’ll be hearing a lot more about the Trust as the conference goes on,” Jill said.

In addition, she highlighted ribbons and pins available during the event. Attendees could connect with Jill or Jered Widmer, IALD, CLD, to learn more.

Meanwhile, Claudio Ramos, FIALD, CLD, held up colorful lanyards as Jill spoke. Together, they brought attention to the Trust amid the evening’s festivities.

The IALD Enlighten Americas opening reception combined hospitality with a reminder of the profession’s history and future. And at our table, the shrimp gave us one more reason to celebrate.
