Billy initiated the ceremony by honoring members for their decades-long commitments, spotlighting Nancy Clanton’s impressive 50-year tenure and Richard Wynton’s remarkable 55 years. Earlier at the IES Emerging Professionals meeting, Richard recounted an early-career incident where a prospective London client turned him down because he wasn’t affiliated with IES, leading to his swift membership acquisition.

A poignant moment in the evening was Billy’s “In Memoriam” tribute, honoring several people including Howard Brandston, Caroline Rinker, and Ian Ashdown. He emphasized, “The legacies of Howard and Ian will perennially resonate within the IES community.” After the awards ceremony and the after party, several attendees congregated in the Presidential Suite, where personal anecdotes and touching stories about Howard were shared.

The Medal Award acknowledges outstanding technical accomplishments that have notably advanced the field of illuminating engineering. Nancy Clanton bestowed this honor upon Lisa Heschong, a globally recognized authority on daylighting. Upon receiving the award, Lisa shared that her journey with the IES began 35 years ago as an architect. Recently, she spent a month in Europe, mentoring budding architects passionate about delving deep into the nuances of daylighting.  She said in the 1950’s and 1960’s we learned how to design beautifully, but that went out the door in the 1980’s during the energy tsunami.  She stated, “Twenty years ago we began to learn about light and its effect on health and well-being. Today we not only design for people’s vision, but also for their health.” She urged the audience to explore daylight as the most fundamental aspect of lighting, saying that natural exposure to daylight is the most natural exposure our bodies have and daylight should be the norm, not the exception in designs.

Earlier in the year, Lisa received a Lifetime Achievement Award from EdisonReport.
