Top 10 “Must See” Products

EdisonReport has sources in all Tier 1 companies, most Tier 2 and some Tier 3. As a result we are privy to a lot of information, which makes some people nervous.   Our anonymous judges have considered 84 different  products for our Top 10 “Must See” list.  This year, as in the past, we only considered companies which exhibit at LIGHTFAIR.

What makes the “Must See” list so valuable is that we are able to evaluate information received within the past few weeks, instead of the past few months.  One product on the list is not yet even named.

Never before has your humble editor seen so many unique and practical products.  2015 is going to be a  GREAT LIGHTFAIR!

Alphabetical Order by Company:

Acuity Olessence Curve (3).jpg

Acuity Brands is transforming lighting design with the development of Duet SSL™ technology.  This is an interplay of OLED and LED light sources in the same luminaire, optimizing both to produce refined aesthetics, photometric performance, superior lighting quality and cost effectiveness. The use of OLED – celebrated for its soft uniform glow, thin forms and diffused light – and LED – trusted as a strong, focused point source – intersects form, function and emotion.   Booth #1640

Cree-LN-041515-002.jpg

Cree will display its LN Series featuring  Cree WaveMax™Technology.   With WaveMax™ Technology, Cree delivers their most intelligent light yet, enabling the future of highly-efficient, modern building designs to become today’s reality, while accelerating adoption of better  LED lighting at greater value.  Cree’s WaveMax™ Technology is a breakthrough as it features up to 90% optical efficiency and precise optical control, enabling customers to encounter a one-of-a-kind lighting experience with enhanced color quality and improved watts per square foot.  Booth #1657

Deco versalite_led.jpgDeco Lighting will launch Versalite, which is a single housing that can be employed across multiple applications, offering several different lighting functions within the same family.  Replacing up to a 400-watt metal halide fixture, the sleek Versalite LED uses different mounting arms to convert into virtually any type of fixture including a wall pack, adjustable wall pack, area light, canopy fixture, flood light, high bay fixture, parking lot fixture, or a shoebox fixture—all from the same housing.  The Electrical Distributor can stock one SKU for 8 different types of luminaires.  Your humble editor has personally seen this fixture in use at Deco’s headquarters.  Booth #2257.

EatonCL_Neo-Ray_Define_Control_Sensor.jpgEaton’s Cooper Lighting has the Neo-Ray Define LED Linear Recessed Luminaire with Integrated Sensor.  it is a “one of a kind” luminaire featuring a 90CRI LED system, range of widths from 1 to 5 inches, lengths in 1 inch increments, and an integrated sensor system that makes it simple to meet many of the new energy code requirements “out of the box”.   Booth #1157.

Energy Focus Inc, Commercial Intellitube® This “One-Tube-Fits-All” Solution provides both direct fit and direct wire options for fluorescent retrofit.  Intellitube is the only tubular LED product available in the market today that support both “plug-and-play” direct-fit operation that works with a ballast, as well as single-ended direct-wire operation that does not require a ballast to function.  Many in our industry earn their living through retrofit and the Intellitube will make their jobs easier and more reliable.  Booth #3959

GE LightGrid Node.jpg

GE Lighting has LightGrid™, a breakthrough technology system for Outdoor Wireless Control of streetlights that allows:

  • Remote monitoring and control including On/Off/Dimming
  • Utility-grade energy measurement with 0.5% accuracy over wide range of loads, temperatures and power factors
  • Metrology data every 15 minutes to support Time of Use Tariffs
  • Maintenance Optimization through fault alerts
  • GPS mapping for Asset Management
  • Plug and Play Commissioning
  • User Friendly Web Application
  • Installed or Hosted solution using Cellular or Wireline Backhaul   Booth 1621

DLD.jpgGreenTek Lighting will launch its Metrolight Driverless Driver™.  The DLD is a clever, and inexpensive, way to eliminate the LED driver by using a small smartbox coupled with an off-the-shelf power supply. Lamp design versatility is improved since there is no driver inside and no need to consider Class 1 or Class 2 isolation, and no need for the large space to accommodate the driver and driver heatsink.  Booth #124

Note:  Randy Reid, Editor of the EdisonReport, has an ownership position in both GreenTek Lighting and Metrolight.

Inventronics Driver 10 yr.jpgInventronics.  Many will argue that the driver is the weak link in today’s luminaires.  Inventronics makes that argument null and void with their 10-yr warranty driver. The EUD-150S105DTL  has a  lifetime projected to be 120,000 hours at 220 Vac input, 80% load and 85°C case temperature, achieved through a combination of careful component selection, excellent thermal design, extensive modeling and simulation of possible failure modes based on physics of failure, and highly accelerated stress testing.  This is a good thing for the industry.  Bill Brown Sales Booth #1021.

TERRALUX has created the first light bulb with a brain. Known as LEDSENSE this new generation of lighting technology has a sense of smell, sight and touch. The light can feel how warm or cold a room is, see if anyone is inside a room and sniff out odors in the air including smoke, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and harmful VOCs. If the light sees people enter a room it will raise the lighting to a brighter level and dim it if people depart and the room is left empty. It can feel temperature and control heating and cooling systems based on the weather and room occupancy levels. If a dangerous gas is detected in the air or if a bathroom is left stinky by an occupant, (Editor’s Note:  this is from the TERRALUX internal description and not my choice of words)  the light can switch on an exhaust fan or trigger an alarm system.  O.K.  Booth #3067.

Thomas Research will launch an Advanced LED Emergency Back-up System. (as of this writing Thomas Research had not decided on a name.) It’s an Emergency back-up for LED luminaires that is designed to work with the existing driver in a fixture. Any driver! The revolutionary aspect of this is that it eliminates the emergency driver from the system (the product is simpler) and one SKU works for all fixtures up to 100W (inventory for OEMs is simpler). Booth #3247.
