Louis Poulsen Returns to Danish Ownership After Eight Years Under Italian Control

One of the most recognizable names in architectural lighting is returning to Danish ownership.

Danish investment company Chr. Augustinus Fabrikker has acquired Louis Poulsen, bringing the iconic lighting manufacturer back under Danish control after eight years with the Italy-based Flos B&B Italia Group. The move places one of Denmark’s most celebrated design brands with a long-term domestic investor that has deep roots in the Danish business community.

A Homecoming for a Danish Design Icon

Few lighting brands can match Louis Poulsen’s heritage.

Founded in Copenhagen in 1874, the company began as a wine-import business known as Kjøbenhavns Direkte Vin Import Kompagni. When electricity transformed Copenhagen in the late 19th century, the company shifted its focus to lighting. That decision launched more than a century of innovation and design leadership.

Today, Louis Poulsen enjoys worldwide recognition for its collaborations with Danish designers, particularly Poul Henningsen. Iconic products such as the PH Artichoke and PH 5 have helped establish the company as one of the strongest ambassadors of Danish lighting design.

From Italy Back to Denmark

Louis Poulsen joined the Investindustrial portfolio in 2018. Investindustrial already owned major design brands including Flos and B&B Italia. The firm later brought those companies together under the Flos B&B Italia Group umbrella.

The acquisition marks another chapter in Louis Poulsen’s long ownership history. Over the past two decades, the company has operated under several owners, including Targetti Sankey, Danish private-equity firm Polaris, and Investindustrial.

Although the companies did not disclose financial terms, the acquisition aligns with Chr. Augustinus Fabrikker’s strategy of serving as a long-term owner of prominent Danish businesses. The foundation-owned investment company manages more than DKK 35 billion in assets and holds significant positions in companies such as Fritz Hansen, GUBI, Royal Unibrew, and Tivoli (an amusement park, not the lighting company.)

Louis Poulsen Returns to Danish Ownership

Louis Poulsen now joins several iconic Danish design brands backed by long-term domestic investors rather than private-equity firms focused on shorter investment horizons.

That ownership structure could provide greater stability for a brand that has built its reputation over generations.

The acquisition also highlights the enduring value of heritage lighting brands. While many manufacturers compete primarily on technology, Louis Poulsen continues to stand apart through design, craftsmanship, and a philosophy centered on the quality of light.

For architects, lighting designers, and specifiers, that commitment appears likely to remain unchanged. The company now has a Danish owner whose strategy includes preserving and strengthening some of Denmark’s most iconic brands.
