Lumetric Introduces Networked SmartPOD to Large Area Lighting Market

Rev 2 of innovative HID lamp direct driver delivers up to 80% energy savings

  • Controllable, Dimmable and Intelligent
  • Built for the Smart Grid
  • Drives Ceramic Metal Halides for superior light quality

FREMONT, Calif. – March 1, 2011 – Lumetric Inc., the leading provider of intelligent large area lighting (ILAL) solutions, today unveiled Rev 2 of its flagship product, the SmartPOD™ luminaire. Built for the Smart Grid, the new SmartPOD boasts advanced networking capabilities and is fully equipped for future-ready demand response. Connecting a network of SmartPODs to Lumetric’s innovative software brings advanced Smart Grid functionalities to large area lighting, enabling additional energy savings of up to 80%.

Designed specifically for the high bay, large area lighting market, the original SmartPOD debuted in 2009 as a plug-and-play replacement for the old energy guzzling HID ballasts, which are no longer a viable solution to drive desirable plasma-based HID lamps that provide the best, sun-quality light preferred for decades for large workspaces. Lumetric’s goal was to create a highly energy-efficient solution, without sacrificing high-quality, high-output light. As result, inventors successfully engineered an innovative method of controlling the arc within HID lamps. Lumetric was able to introduce linear dimming and advanced control options to the tried and true HID lamps. With Rev 2, Lumetric now also drives state-of-the-art ceramic metal halides, delivering the greatest light output and highest color rendering in the industry at less cost, without compromise.

“The team of engineers at Lumetric come from an unusual mix of backgrounds in nuclear energy, robotics and energy efficiency, prompting a unique approach to lighting. Our success in taming the HID arc has allowed us to deliver the sun-quality, high output lighting that has long been preferred for large areas.” said Lumetric Co-Founder and CTO Greg Davis. “Best of all, the SmartPOD accomplishes this while drastically decreasing a facilities energy costs. Now, we have integrated the smart grid component to open up the door to additional savings for our customers.”

The SmartPOD is the simple, sensible and smart alternative to outdated, legacy HID drivers, making beautiful HID lighting responsive and efficient. Numerous features of the new SmartPOD set it apart from other lighting technologies that aspire to properly light large, high-bay areas.

  • Superior light quality: Greater than 100 lumens per watt and color rendering  greater than 95 CRI.
  •  Plug and play design: Easy to install, simple retrofit process (no rewiring)
  •  Linear dimming: Breakthrough in HID technology, enabling unprecedented light control
  •  Advanced controls: Motion sensing, daylight harvesting, zonal controls and time of day scheduling
  •  Increased bulb life: Less maintenance, 150% longer life than alternative large are lighting
  •  High wattage/less heat: Can run 200-400 watt bulbs yet luminaire itself emits little to no heat. UL certified to operate in ambient temperatures up to 65°C.
  •  Smart Grid ready: Demand response, peak avoidance, automated load shedding and predictive maintenance solutions.

With its responsive, flexible approach to lighting large areas, the SmartPOD offers a comfortable user experience that improves safety and increases productivity. The SmartPOD is an ideal lighting solution for high bay facilities, manufacturing plants, big box retailers, showrooms, convention centers and precision workshops looking to reduce energy costs, without sacrificing effective lighting for the tasks at hand. With more than two million hours of operations, the SmartPOD has already been installed for customers across many industries including Kelly Moore Paints, Pet Extreme and TheaterWorks, among many others.
